The City of Burien has initiated the process of developing a property tax levy lid lift proposal to fund public safety in Burien. Following more than two years of community engagement, research and planning by City staff, and presentations to the Burien City Council, the City has continued to make progress on creating a proposal that reflects community priorities.

To ensure compliance with local election rules and deadlines for the November 4, 2025 general election, staff received approval from the City Council at its June 2, 2025 meeting to proceed with recruitment of Burien residents to serve on committees to draft statements against and in favor of a proposed levy.

Applications for pro and con committees will not open until draft ballot language is presented at the June 16, 2025 City Council meeting. The City Council will review the applications and appoint up to three members for each committee. Committee members may speak to the community and gain insight to draft a position statement for voters’ pamphlet which is submitted to King County Elections.

With its first-ever property tax levy proposal, the City values the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and will continue to keep the Burien community informed on next steps as this process moves forward.
